I have a really good idea for a business on the Internet. How do I start?

You start like you would in any other business: with good market research and a business plan. The problem is that most people do not know where to look for the information they need to make a plan, this is why they call us. It is part of our job to evaluate new business ideas, do the costing and determine the potential profitability. Unlike doing business in the physical world Internet business start-ups are, depending on the type of business, often low cost. They do, however, require "staying power". At this time, venture capital for Internet start-up businesses is very difficult to obtain, so be prepared to pay start-up costs out of your own pocket.

How secure is a secure server?

This is a rather complicated question. Security requires encryption (or coding). As we all know, no matter how well we secure our home, there is always someone looking for a way to "break" our security. Early keys were a challenge for early burglars. The better a burglar got the more the key was improved. The more the key was improved the better the burglar had to get. Encryption is much the same. There is always someone out there who dedicates himself to this rather loathsome task of finding new ways to intrude and/or steal. Essentially, security, using sufficient encryption, is quite satisfactory. It is no worse than, for example, giving your credit card to your local merchant. It certainly is safer (as a very general rule) than giving your card number out over the phone - providing, once again, that you use sufficient encryption (a minimum level of 128 is what we would recommend for high security).

How do you make money on the web?

Obviously, you make money on the Internet by providing a service or product that Internet surfers value. Finding this product or service is the difficult part. In addition to finding it, you must also have a good understanding of this service or product. For example, you probably will not be successful selling engineering services if you are not an engineer. There are two important factors that you must consider. Imagine what kind of people go on the Internet - who they are, what their educational level is, etc. Secondly, it has been our experience that specialty products and services do very well on the Internet, that is, products and services which are difficult to find in the physical world.

How do you know when you are on a secure server?

It depends on which browser you are using. Generally, if you look at the status bar along the bottom of your browser a yellow padlock will appear indicating you are in a secure area. In Netscape, the lock is always present, however, it only turns yellow and appears closed when you are in that secure area. In Microsoft Internet Explorer the yellow padlock is only visible when in the secure area.

Secure server renders making payments and providing personal information over the internet safe (or "secure").
